China's hard-line stance toward Japan has been led not by President Hu Jintao, but by Vice President Xi Jinping, who are going to be the next president.

But Xi Jinping has assumed a historical mission. He was born on April 20, 1953 in the Japanese calendar. But on that day, South Korean volunteer coastguards set up camp on Liancourt Rocks. Liancourt Rocks have been one of the disputed areas between Japan and South Korea. In addition, the day marked the Koki 660th anniversary of the establishment of Chinzei Tandai, a military post, (March 7, 1293 in the Japanese calendar). Africa Review January 21 2012

The Muslim Brotherhood's party has won 47.18 per cent of seats in the Egyptian parliament, the electoral commission announced on Saturday as it gave the final results from marathon polls.

The Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) won 235 seats in the new People's Assembly, or 47.18 per cent, committee head Abdel Moez Ibrahim said.

The ultra-conservative Salafist Al Nur party is in second place with 121 seats or nearly 25 per cent, while the liberal Wafd Party follows with nearly nine percent.

The FJP secured 127 seats on party lists and its candidates won another 108 in first-past-the-post constituency votes, according to the results announced on Saturday.

The landmark election was the first since the overthrow of veteran president Hosni Mubarak in February last year. It was launched in November and carried out in three stages

The People's Assembly, or lower house of parliament, is made up of 498 elected MPs and 10 appointed by the ruling military.

It will hold its first session on Monday.

Japanese Buddhist temple vandalised after cancelling torch role
ANC News Apr 20, 2008

An ancient Japanese Buddhist temple which cancelled its role in the Olympic torch relay has been vandalised.

The Zenkoji Buddhist Temple in the city of Nagano was to have been the starting point for the Olympic torch relay in Japan next Saturday.

But last week monks withdrew permission for the staging of the relay at the heritage listed site in support of Tibetan Buddhists and because of security concerns.

Overnight the temple has been struck by vandals who used white spray paint to mark patterns on doors and pillars at the 1,400-year-old temple.

Police say they are investigating whether the vandalism is related to the torch relay decision.

Security has been stepped up for Saturday's event with up to 3,000 police mobilised, many of them riot squad officers.

JOHNNY, I HARDLY KNEW YE XVI
July 29, 2012 “JOHNNY, I HARDLY KNEW YE” XVI
Knoxville, Tennessee (JFK+50) Today we continue our report of Chapter 12 of the book by Kenneth P. O’Donnell & David F. Powers with Joe McCarthy. It is published by Little, Brown & Company.

The title of Chapter 12 is “Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye”

Kenneth O’Donnell writes about August 7, 1963, the day when Jackie delivered a baby boy, 5 weeks premature, at Otis AFB.

Kenny tells us that her obstetrician, Dr. John Walsh, rushed her to the air base hospital & the President flew to be with her.

The baby, delivered by Caeserean section, weighed 4 pounds 10 1/2 ounces.

He was immediately baptized by the base chaplain & named PATRICK BOUVIER KENNEDY.

Patrick, having breathing difficulties, was transferred to Children’s Medical Center in Boston & then to Harvard’s School of Public Health where he was placed in a high-pressure oxygen chamber.*

*Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, also known as Hyaline membrane disease, occurs in the underdeveloped lungs of premature infants. The condition worsens 2 to 4 days after birth.

Source: PubMedHealth @ www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

JFK spent the night at the hospital with Dave Powers. At 2 a.m. he was informed that the baby’s condition was worsening.

While waiting for the elevator, the President saw a severely burned child in one of the rooms. He found out the mother’s name & wrote a note of sympathy for her.

Dave said later…

“There he was, with his own baby dying downstairs but he had to take the time to write a note to that poor woman, asking her to keep her courage up.”

Two hours later Patrick passed away.

JFK said:

“He put up quite a fight. He was a beautiful baby.”

Then the President went upstairs to his room & cried.

Polls, Politics, and the Impact of Global Warming
The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation February 28, 2008

The Japanese public’s support for Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda’s cabinet has declined from a high of 47 percent in the October 2007 Asahi Shimbun poll listed on this website, to 29 percent in a survey conducted by the Sankei Shimbun and Fuji News Network on February 23-24, 2008. Perhaps more important, according to the Sankei poll, the Fukuda cabinet’s disapproval rating hit 52 percent, up five points from the previous survey conducted by the two news outlets.

・・・・・・・・・・・・・・

Given the near consensus in Japan over global warming, as well as the other factors discussed above which make addressing global warming worth pursuing for the LDP, Prime Minister Fukuda has recently indicated a willingness to take on business leaders who have actively fought greenhouse emissions reductions mandates. In a speech to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on January 26, 2008, Fukuda said that “The G-8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit will take up discussions on the future of the planet, and it is an ideal opportunity to open perspective towards a bright future. More celeb death rumors: Now it's Jeff Goldblum and Harrison Ford!
Tampa Bay Times JUNE 25, 2009
Only hours after news broke about Michael Jackson's death, the Internet is buzzing with rumors that both Jeff Goldblum and Harrison Ford died Thursday.

Only one website is reporting Goldblum's death -- and their site isn't currently up and running. Still, the rumor is that he fell to his death on the set of a movie in New Zealand. Here's another mention. However, his page on Wikipedia reports that the news is a hoax.

Screencrave.com also insists its a hoax: "Police National Head Quarters in New Zealand told 3 News they know nothing about the claims and have not had any reports of such an incident in Northland. They say similar rumors were circulating six to eight weeks ago and believe it’s false information."

Another website reports that Twitter posts indicate Harrison Ford died today, but again nobody else is reporting it or passing it along.

Chapter 7: The Constitutional Framework
Japanese Legal System

Because the requirements of the constitution concerning family law were so faithfully implemented through revisions of the Code and other statutes enacted since 1947, there have been no constitutional challenge before the Japanese Supreme Court in this area. There have been, however, two constitutional cases concerning the penal provisions for patricide that illustrate the changing attitude toward traditional values.

The Japanese Penal Code was partially amended in 1947. The most important amendments were those abolishing the crime of adultery and crimes against the Imperial household. Articles 200 and 205, however, which provided heavier penalties for killing one's lineal ascendants remained unchanged. This gave rise to several constitutional cases that drew public attention because they questioned the validity of the traditional concept of filial piety.

Obama: Troops leaving Iraq with heads held high
REUTERS Dec 14, 2011

President Barack Obama welcomed home some of the last U.S. troops from Iraq on Wednesday, marking a symbolic end to the nearly nine-year war that strained America's armed forces and damaged its standing worldwide.

Addressing soldiers at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, home of the 82nd Airborne Division, Obama stopped short of declaring victory in Iraq but called the winding down of the conflict "an extraordinary achievement."

"It is harder to end a war than to begin one," he told about 3,000 soldiers gathered in an airplane hangar as they punctuated his speech with cheers and hollers.

Despite lingering questions about whether the United States should have invaded the Middle Eastern country, the last American troops "will cross the border out of Iraq with their heads held high," Obama said.

"Of course, Iraq is not a perfect place. But we are leaving behind a sovereign, stable and self-reliant Iraq, with a representative government that was elected by its people," he said. "We are ending a war not with a final battle, but with a final march toward home."

As of this week, there were about 5,500 U.S. troops left in Iraq, down from more than 170,000 at the height of the war that Obama's predecessor George W. Bush started in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The battle of Sekigahara
MUST LOVE JAPAN

In September 14, Ieyasu gave up waiting the arrival of Hidetada, and prepared to move Nakasendo to attack Osaka. To prevent that, Seigun moved before Togun and set up a camp at Sekigahara field. They decided Sekigahara as the battle field. Most of Togun's samurai settled their headquarters surrounding the field of Sekigahara, and Mori, Kobayakawa and Mitsunari settled on the top of mountains. Mitsunari was located on the top of Mt. Sasao which was north west side of Sekigahara. Kobayakawa was on the top of Mt. Matsuo which was the south of Sekigahara. Mori was on the top of Mt. Nangu which was south east of Sekigahara.

The Sekigahara was covered with deep mist in the morning of September 15. Ieyasu arrived Sekigahara in early in the morning and settled his headquarter at Mt. Momokubari which was located east of Sekigahara. Placed Ikeda, Hachisuka, Yamanouchi and Asano on back of him for the reserve army. Then, Starting from Fukushima, he filled Sekigahara by his army.

At 8 am, the mist was getting thiner and Fukushima started attacking the army of Ukita and this was the beginning of the battle. Ukita had 17,000 of army which was the largest army in Seigun, and Fukushima, Honda, Kato and Ii of Togun fought a hard battle against Ukita. Mitsunari's army fought against the armies of Hosokawa and Kuroda.

At 10 am, Mitsunari sent Noroshi, smoke signal to Kobayakawa and Mori to start full force attack. At this moment, only 33,000 armies of Seigun was fighting against 70,000 armies of Togun. However, because of the geographical advantage, Seigun was having an upper hand over Togun. If the rest of Seigun, especially, Kobayakawa and Mori started attacking Togun, Togun was surrounded and Seigun could win easily. Also, Shimazu of Seigun, the strongest army at Sengoku period, could gave a serious damage to Togun. However, none of them made any action.

Statement by Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda On Enactment of the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law
Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan January 11, 2008

As of today, the Replenishment Support Special Measures Law was enacted. The Government of Japan intends to formulate the implementation plan in the middle of next week and set sail Maritime Self-Defense Force vessels for the Indian Ocean by the end of January so as to resume the refueling activities at the earliest possible date.

Japan's prosperity can only be enjoyed in a peaceful and stable international community. It needs to actively cooperate with the "fight against terror" on its own judgment so as to contribute to the international community. The refueling activities are a demonstration of Japan's efforts to do the utmost within its capability. It is truly significant that Japan can now rejoin the "fight against terror".

It is important to implement humanitarian and reconstruction assistance as well as security and counter-terrorism measures so as to eradicate terrorism. The Government of Japan will continue to actively implement humanitarian and reconstruction assistance and contribute to the nation-building of Afghanistan in close coordination with the international community.

I hope to gain further understanding and support of the Japanese people for these efforts of the Government of Japan.

The Establishment of the Department of Education

In the period immediately following the Meiji Restoration, much of Japan remained under the jurisdiction of the various independent fiefs. Consequently the initial activities of the new Meiji government in education and other policy areas affected only the limited portion of the nation under its jurisdiction.

As we have already seen in the preceding chapter, the Grand School (Daigakko), which was established as the nation's main center for higher education, was given an additional task of being the central government's first agency for educational reform; and in 1870 it was renamed the University (Daigaku). Then on August 29, 1871, with the Abolition of the Fiefs and the Establishment of Prefectures throughout the country, the central government for the first time could begin to introduce a unified educational structure for the entire nation. The Department of Education (old Monbusho) was established on September 2, 1871, four days after the Abolition of the Fiefs, based on an grand council proclamation, to implement a policy of educational unification, at that time the University was abolished.

July 14, 1099 Jerusalem captured in First Crusade
Google Drive

During the First Crusade, Christian knights from Europe capture Jerusalem after seven weeks of siege and begin massacring the city's Muslim and Jewish population.

Beginning in the 11th century, Christians in Jerusalem were increasingly persecuted by the city's Islamic rulers, especially when control of the holy city passed from the relatively tolerant Egyptians to the Seljuk Turks in 1071. Late in the century, Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comenus, also threatened by the Seljuk Turks, appealed to the West for aid. In 1095, Pope Urban II publicly called for a crusade to aid Eastern Christians and recover the holy lands. The response by Western Europeans was immediate.

The first crusaders were actually undisciplined hordes of French and German peasants who met with little success. One group, known as the "People's Crusade," reached as far as Constantinople before being annihilated by the Turks. In 1096, the main crusading force, featuring some 4,000 mounted knights and 25,000 infantry, began to move east. Led by Raymond of Toulouse, Godfrey of Bouillon, Robert of Flanders, and Bohemond of Otranto, the army of Christian knights crossed into Asia Minor in 1097.

In June, the crusaders captured the Turkish-held city of Nicaea and then defeated a massive army of Seljuk Turks at Dorylaeum. From there, they marched on to Antioch, located on the Orontes River below Mount Silpius, and began a difficult six-month siege during which they repulsed several attacks by Turkish relief armies. Finally, early in the morning of June 3, 1098, Bohemond persuaded a Turkish traitor to open Antioch's Bridge Gate, and the knights poured into the city. In an orgy of killing, the Christians massacred thousands of enemy soldiers and citizens, and all but the city's fortified citadel was taken. Later in the month, a large Turkish army arrived to attempt to regain the city, but they too were defeated, and the Antioch citadel surrendered to the Europeans.

After resting and reorganizing for six months, the crusaders set off for their ultimate goal, Jerusalem. Their numbers were now reduced to some 1,200 cavalry and 12,000 foot soldiers. On June 7, 1099, the Christian army reached the holy city, and finding it heavily fortified, began building three enormous siege towers. By the night of July 13, the towers were complete, and the Christians began fighting their way across Jerusalem's walls. On July 14, Godfrey's men were the first to penetrate the defenses, and the Gate of Saint Stephen was opened. The rest of the knights and soldiers then poured in, the city was captured, and tens of thousands of its occupants were slaughtered.

The crusaders had achieved their aims, and Jerusalem was in Christian hands, but an Egyptian army marched on the holy city a few weeks later to challenge their claim. The Egyptians' defeat by the outnumbered Christians in August ended Muslim resistance to the Europeans for the time being, and five small Christian states were set up in the region under the rule of the leaders of the crusade.

Skull & Bones sued for Geronimo’s remains
Yale Daily News February 17, 2009

The heirs of an Apache chieftain whose remains are rumored to be held inside Yale’s oldest secret society filed a lawsuit today demanding the return of their ancestor’s skull.

Twenty descendants of the legendary Apache chieftain Geronimo are suing government officials, the University and the society Skull & Bones in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to seek the return of his remains as well as punitive damages.

One hundred years ago today, Geronimo died of pneumonia at Fort Sill, Okla., but the suit alleges members of the society exhumed his remains in 1918 or 1919 and transported them to the society’s High Street tomb in New Haven. The group rumored to have stolen Geronimo’s skull, bones and other items from his gravesite is said to have included Prescott Bush, the father of former President George H. W. Bush ’48 and grandfather to former President George W. Bush ’68.

“To assure that all existing remains of Geronimo and funerary objects are recovered by Geronimo’s lineal descendants, the Order of Skull and Bones and Yale University must account for any such articles that are or have been in their possession, or on their property,” the formal complaint states. “And persons with knowledge must provide any facts known to them concerning the claims.”

On Party Anniversary, China Rewrites History
The New York Times July 20, 2011

When President Hu Jintao said in a pomp-filled ceremony in the Great Hall of the People on July 1, “The Communist Party of China was founded 90 years ago today,” and, “From then on, the Chinese people embarked on the bright road of striving for independence and liberation and the glorious pursuit of prosperity and strength,” he was wrong.

About the date, anyway.

The party’s true founding date is July 23, 1921, according to official documents. An autobiographical account by one of the party’s founders and, remarkably, memories and news reports of a murder in a Shanghai hotel corroborate that, providing important clues for historians keen to establish the truth.

Ultimately, the strange story of the wrong founding date of the world’s biggest political party is the result of Mao Zedong’s mistaken memory and the party’s disregard for truth, historians say.

While the true date is now recorded in some Chinese history books, to this day most Chinese are unaware of the error and are astonished when they hear of it. For months, people had been exposed to intense propaganda about the July 1 anniversary from the news media, workplaces and slogans festooning roads.

Japanese government minister's Nazi remarks cause furor
CNN News August 2, 2013

Japan's deputy prime minister stirred controversy this week by appearing to suggest that the government could learn from the way that Nazi Germany changed its constitution.

The remarks by Taro Aso, who is also the Japanese finance minister, provoked criticism from Japan's neighbors and a Jewish organization in the United States.

Aso, a former prime minister who has slipped up with verbal gaffes in the past, retracted the comments later in the week but refused to apologize for them or resign, saying they had been taken out of context.

Amid persistent talk in Japan about revising the country's pacifist post-war constitution, Aso set off the controversy at a seminar Monday, in which he said that discussions over constitutional changes should be carried out calmly.

"Germany's Weimar Constitution was changed into the Nazi Constitution before anyone knew," he said in comments widely reported by the Japanese media. "It was changed before anyone else noticed. Why don't we learn from that method?"

Aso added: "I have no intention of denying democracy. Again, I repeat that we should not decide [constitutional revisions] in a frenzy."

In 1933, Adolf Hitler's National Socialists turned the democratic Weimar Republic into a dictatorship using "a combination of legal procedure, persuasion, and terror," according to the U.S. Library of Congress.

Hitler used a fire that burned down the parliament building as a pretext to suppress the opposition through an emergency clause in the constitution. He then pushed through the Enabling Act, which allowed him to govern without parliament and vastly extend the Nazis' grip on power.
